User Archetypes
Two users. One problem.
Different stakes.
Research identified two giver archetypes. Both fail at the discovery step for opposite reasons. The product had to serve both without alienating either, this shaped every prioritisation decision from quiz length to card copy length.
ARCHETYPE 01 – The Overthinker

Low–Mid income (£2,700/pm) · Gifts for: girlfriend, 3-year relationship
"I know her better than anyone in her life.
I just never know what to get her."
The paradox: 95% emotional investment, 80% knowledge of the recipient, 12% confidence. Caring more makes him more paralysed instead of less.

The underlying problem
Gift-giving is a 눈치 (nunchi) problem
눈치 is a Korean concept: It is the ability to read unspoken social cues, emotional atmosphere, and what someone needs without them having to say it.
Uncovered during one interview and translated into our personas.
An example is Marcus, he has high 눈치. He notices everything about his girlfriend. He has all the signal he needs. But existing services strip all of that away by asking for search terms and categories, which is exactly the wrong input format for what he actually knows.
The biggest pattern was that many men tend to struggle with this particular point of contention in the communication process of gift giving, where current methods of "gift searching" are unable to help them translate what they know – into a gift.
Givvo was designed to honour that intelligence – to meet the giver at the level they actually operate at,
instead of the level that a search engine requires.
Which determined that there are 3 gaps nobody really designs gift-services for
01 The translation gap
No service converts relational knowledge into a gift brief. Every existing service starts with a category or occasion. "She likes ceramics" doesn't fit a search bar. "He's into craft beer" doesn't help when you're facing 40,000 results.
Givvo aims to start with the person, with what the giver already knows, and then does the translation work.
02 The shortlist gap
The market currently offers either one answer which tend to be prescriptive, or, thousands, which is overwhelming.
Nobody offers a curated shortlist of 3–5 options with clear reasons attached. Having intentional recommendations with rationale resolves anxiety without reintroducing it. A considered shortlist is a different cognitive experience from a catalogue.
03 The language gap
No service gives the giver language to use when handing the gift over.
Givvo's recommendation comes with a reason, so the moment of giving makes the recipient feel like the gift was thought out, researched, and intentional. The handover is the most important moment in the entire service, and it has never been designed for.

Revealed that Givvo's intended position is currently unoccupied.
Every competitor anchors to either a category or an occasion. None starts with the relationship.

Search engines are free and fast but overwhelm.
Concierge services offer precision but don't scale.
Givvo bridges this gap: concierge-level precision with the speed and accessibility of a digital product. The market space is unoccupied, and Givvo is a product that was designed to try and lead it.

Every product is the sum of its trade-offs. These are the four decisions that helped shaped Givvo
DECISION 01
Replace the wishlist with observations
Wishlists put the burden on the recipient and kill the surprise. The better input is what the giver has already noticed (ie. habits, frictions, interests, offhand comments).
Seven targeted questions extract that knowledge without the giver realising how much they already know.

DECISION 02
Swipe to curate, not scroll to shop
A grid of results triggers a shopping mindset: compare, evaluate, hesitate. A swipe mechanic, borrowed from Hinge's curation model – triggers a decision mindset.
Each card makes a case. You judge it, commit, move on. Shortlisting feels like curating, not buying. The psychological difference is significant.

DECISION 03
AI to sell each gift and not just to surface it
Product descriptions describe. The Givvo card makes a case.
It tells the user why this gift works, and why it's specifically right for this person
based on what the user told us. Plus a line to say when handing it over, which eases the moment of giving, not just the moment of buying.
Inspired by Netflix's research on personalised framing lifting click-through on identical content.

DECISION 04
Build a social identity layer as part of the core
Gifting is inherently social. A solo discovery tool has a ceiling on retention.
Thus "GivvoTag" – a unique @handle for every user, allows people find each other, share wishlists, and build a shared gifting network.
The more users on the platform, the more useful each individual's tag is.
Uses decentralised peer-to-peer mesh network powered by direct, reciprocal network effects (Metcalfe’s Law + Marketplace Dynamics).
Pattern: P2P identity layers (eg. RevTag, CashTag, Venmo handles, etc)
AskGivvo, the companion pathway
Some people don't want six questions.
Sometimes, it's easier to describe.
The quiz assumes a user can map their knowledge into discrete answers, and unfortunately, not everyone can.
AskGivvo aims to be the conversational alternative, it is the same recommendation engine, accessed through natural language. Now, user do not require structured input, just description. A conversation designed to communicate like the way people actually think.
Let's look at Marcus on the right:
He knows his girlfriend collects ceramics, watches cooking videos, and hates gestures without thought. He has everything Givvo needs. But the quiz asks him to categorise that knowledge, and categorisation loses the nuance. The chatbot lets him describe what he notices and let the AI do the translation for him.

If I could boil gift giving into a tagline, it would be:

The product needs to be too."
Why? Because a discovery tool with one user is useful, a gifting network with many users compounds in value.
Thus the social layer was designed from the start instead of it being retrofitted later.

The identity primitive that makes the whole social layer work without friction.

Mutual connections with relationship labels; partner, close friend, colleague.
Labels feed silently into gift recommendations without being visible to the shopper.
Personal Wishlists
Every user builds their own wishlist, visible only to confirmed connections.
Items are claimed anonymously, so that two people don't buy the same thing and the surprise holds.
Invite link
Every user gets a shareable link. Non-users land on a page showing the wishlist waiting for them; pull into sign-up, not push.
Conversion is built into the social mechanic.
Calendar Sync
Scans Google Calendar and iCal for birthday events and surfaces them as suggested recipient profiles.
Exports occasions as .ics with VALARM reminders.
Hint flow
In the post-shortlist phase, an option to send a calibrated nudge to the recipient is presented.

Research identified two giver archetypes. Both fail at the discovery step for opposite reasons. The product had to serve both without alienating either, this shaped every prioritisation decision from quiz length to card copy length.
ARCHETYPE 01 – The Overthinker

Low–Mid income (£2,700/pm) · Gifts for: girlfriend, 3-year relationship
"I know her better than anyone in her life.
I just never know what to get her."
The paradox: 95% emotional investment, 80% knowledge of the recipient, 12% confidence. Caring more makes him more paralysed instead of less.

ARCHETYPE 02 – Thoughtful but uninvested

Has no patience for a 20-question quiz.
Defaults to Amazon because it's fast, not because it's right.
Needs a recommendation he can trust without needing to verify it.

The underlying problem
Gift-giving is a 눈치 (nunchi) problem
눈치 is a Korean concept: It is the ability to read unspoken social cues, emotional atmosphere, and what someone needs without them having to say it.
Uncovered during one interview and translated into our personas.
An example is Marcus, he has high 눈치. He notices everything about his girlfriend. He has all the signal he needs. But existing services strip all of that away by asking for search terms and categories, which is exactly the wrong input format for what he actually knows.
The biggest pattern was that many men tend to struggle with this particular point of contention in the communication process of gift giving, where current methods of "gift searching" are unable to help them translate what they know – into a gift.
Givvo was designed to honour that intelligence – to meet the giver at the level they actually operate at,
instead of the level that a search engine requires.
Which determined that there are 3 gaps nobody really designs gift-services for
01 The translation gap
No service converts relational knowledge into a gift brief. Every existing service starts with a category or occasion. "She likes ceramics" doesn't fit a search bar. "He's into craft beer" doesn't help when you're facing 40,000 results.
Givvo aims to start with the person, with what the giver already knows, and then does the translation work.
02 The shortlist gap
The market currently offers either one answer which tend to be prescriptive, or, thousands, which is overwhelming.
Nobody offers a curated shortlist of 3–5 options with clear reasons attached. Having intentional recommendations with rationale resolves anxiety without reintroducing it. A considered shortlist is a different cognitive experience from a catalogue.
03 The language gap
No service gives the giver language to use when handing the gift over.
Givvo's recommendation comes with a reason, so the moment of giving makes the recipient feel like the gift was thought out, researched, and intentional. The handover is the most important moment in the entire service, and it has never been designed for.

Mapping the competitive landscape on two axes;
1. Discovery method (personal guidance vs catalogue browsing)
2. Primary input (relationship focus vs occasion focus)
Revealed that Givvo's intended position is currently unoccupied. Every competitor anchors to either a category or an occasion. None starts with the relationship.

Search engines are free and fast but overwhelm.
Concierge services offer precision but don't scale.
Givvo bridges this gap: concierge-level precision with the speed and accessibility of a digital product. The market space is unoccupied, and Givvo is a product that was designed to try and lead it.

Every product is the sum of its trade-offs. These are the four decisions that helped shaped Givvo
DECISION 01
Replace the wishlist with observations
Wishlists put the burden on the recipient and kill the surprise. The better input is what the giver has already noticed (ie. habits, frictions, interests, offhand comments).
Seven targeted questions extract that knowledge without the giver realising how much they already know.

DECISION 02
Swipe to curate, not scroll to shop
A grid of results triggers a shopping mindset: compare, evaluate, hesitate. A swipe mechanic, borrowed from Hinge's curation model – triggers a decision mindset.
Each card makes a case. You judge it, commit, move on. Shortlisting feels like curating, not buying. The psychological difference is significant.

DECISION 03
AI to sell each gift and not just to surface it
Product descriptions describe. The Givvo card makes a case.
It tells the user why this gift works, and why it's specifically right for this person
based on what the user told us. Plus a line to say when handing it over, which eases the moment of giving, not just the moment of buying.

DECISION 04
Build a social identity layer as part of the core
Gifting is inherently social. A solo discovery tool has a ceiling on retention.
Thus "GivvoTag" – a unique @handle for every user, allows people find each other, share wishlists, and build a shared gifting network.
The more users on the platform, the more useful each individual's tag is.
Uses decentralised peer-to-peer mesh network powered by direct, reciprocal network effects (Metcalfe’s Law + Marketplace Dynamics).
Pattern: P2P identity layers (eg. RevTag, CashTag)
AskGivvo, the companion pathway
Some people don't want six questions.
Sometimes, it's easier to describe.
The quiz assumes a user can map their knowledge into discrete answers, and unfortunately, not everyone can.
AskGivvo aims to be the conversational alternative, it is the same recommendation engine, accessed through natural language. Now, user do not require structured input, just description. A conversation designed to communicate like the way people actually think.
Let's look at Marcus below:
He knows his girlfriend collects ceramics, watches cooking videos, and hates gestures without thought. He has everything Givvo needs. But the quiz asks him to categorise that knowledge, and categorisation loses the nuance. The chatbot lets him describe what he notices and let the AI do the translation for him.

Aims to help with handover anxiety. Benchmarking revealed that no other gifting product addresses the moment of giving, only the moment of buying.

Practical lead time notes create low-pressure urgency without manufactured scarcity via providing sourced, useful and practical information instead of relying on "dark-marketing" patterns.

"Finding gifts for [Giftee's NAME]" stays visible throughout. Every swipe decision stays tethered to the right person.
The social layer
If I could boil gift giving into a tagline, it would be:
"Gifting is social.
The product needs to be too."
Why? Because a discovery tool with one user is useful, a gifting network with many users compounds in value.
Thus the social layer was designed from the start instead of it being retrofitted later.

Mutual connections with relationship labels; partner, close friend, colleague.
Labels feed silently into gift recommendations without being visible to the shopper.

Every user builds their own wishlist, visible only to confirmed connections.
Items are claimed anonymously, so that two people don't buy the same thing and the surprise holds.
Invite link
Every user gets a shareable link. Non-users land on a page showing the wishlist waiting for them; pull into sign-up, not push.
Conversion is built into the social mechanic.
Calendar Sync
Scans Google Calendar and iCal for birthday events and surfaces them as suggested recipient profiles.
Exports occasions as .ics with VALARM reminders.
Hint flow
In the post-shortlist phase, an option to send a calibrated nudge to the recipient is presented.
3 communication styles from: "just a feeling" to "show them and lastly, the option to "keep it to yourself" and let the gift be a secret.
